State Board of Education approves World Language Content Standards!
FLAGS members Nicole Naditz and Chirstine Lanphere joined colleagues from the California Foreign Language Project, San Francisco Unified School District, the California Association of School Administrators and others to testify before the State Board of Education in favor of adopting the draft World Language Content Standards for California Schools K-12. State Board Member Yvonne Chan preceded the public contact period with an eloquent and enthusiastic statement of support for standards for our profession. After the public comment period, the Board members made additional supportive comments and ultimately voted unanimously in favor of adopting the standards. This landmark moment represents the culmination of years of work to have our curriculum area recognized in the same league as all of the other subject areas in the state (who already had content standards).
Standards will be available on this site as soon as the California Department of Education completes the final edits. In the meantime, join the Capital Foreign Language Project at one of its
"Unpacking the Standards Trainings" being held in Spring 2009. Each attendee will receive a pre-publication copy of the standards at this event.
